Difference Between Sessions and Consent Actions

Understanding the difference between sessions and consent actions is key to interpreting your reports correctly.

Session

A session is recorded every time a page is viewed where the CookieHub JavaScript is loaded. This can occur:

  • First-time visit – A user visits for the first time.
  • Expired cache – A returning visitor after the CookieHub JavaScript cache has expired (usually every 24 hours).

Consent Action

A consent action is only logged when a user interacts with the consent dialog to accept or decline cookies.

  • Most users give consent once per year unless they clear their cookies.
  • The CookieHub widget is cached for 24 hours, meaning a single user can generate many sessions but only one consent action.
