How sessions are calculated in CookieHub

A session in CookieHub is recorded each time the consent widget loads on your website. This happens whenever a visitor’s browser requests the CookieHub script, regardless of whether consent is accepted or rejected.

What is a session?

Unlike analytics tools such as Google Analytics, which track user activity based on interactions or page views, CookieHub measures sessions based on widget loads. This makes session counting a reliable way to monitor how often your consent banner is displayed.

How CookieHub tracks sessions

  • Daily count per visitor: Typically, one session is counted per unique visitor per day. If the same visitor returns within the same day, it usually doesn’t add another session unless certain conditions apply.

Widget loads: A session is logged every time the CookieHub consent widget loads, including when:

    • A visitor returns after clearing cookies
    • The site is visited in incognito or private browsing mode
    • The consent widget is triggered on a fresh visit

Key factors that affect session count

  • Browser caching: Caching can reduce widget reloads, lowering the number of sessions counted.
  • Multiple visits: If users clear cookies or browse in incognito mode, additional sessions may be counted because the consent widget needs to reload.

How to monitor sessions

You can track your session usage in real time through the CookieHub dashboard. It shows the total number of sessions used during the current billing period, helping you manage traffic and avoid unexpected charges.
